YTD Inventory / Shipment Report
In Tons
5th Marketing MonthCrop: 20241. Monthly exports during the 5th marketing month (January 20th - February 18th) reached 22,000 MT of in-shell equivalent pistachios; a 100% increase compared to the previous year. Top export destinations were re-export countries (namely, Türkiye and the UAE), followed by the Indian Subcontinent, where demand for Iranian pistachios remains strong even after Diwali. The Middle East also showed strong demand in preparation for Ramadan sales.

2. After three years of small shipment figures, Iranian pistachio exports to the Far East rebounded strongly, accounting for over 30% of YTD shipments during the current marketing year. Early in the season, demand for Iranian pistachios surged ahead of the Chinese New Year due to competitive prices. However, since November, the demand in the Far East market has weakened, with monthly export volumes gradually declining.

3. YTD export shipments reached 123,000 MT of in-shell equivalent pistachios; an 81% increase compared to the previous year. The year-to-date "export to opening inventory ratio" at the end of the 5th marketing month stands at 53%, reflecting an exceptional export season. This ratio remained below 40% during the same period in the past couple of years. Competitive prices of Iranian pistachios in addition to limited supply from other origins have been key drivers of this success.

4. Pistachio kernel consumption is growing rapidly around the world. Global demand for Iranian pistachio kernels has been very strong, because of their diversity and price competitiveness apart from limited supply from other origins. Kernels now account for 42% of total in-shell equivalent Iranian pistachio export shipments, surpassing the four-year average of 35% for the same period.

5. Iranian GPPK monthly shipments (470 MT) have significantly improved compared to previous months. The Iranian government’s cautious easing of export restrictions to the EU has played a pivotal role in this recovery.

6. Reports indicate that the 2025 crop has accumulated sufficient chill hours. Remaining inventory at the end of the 5th marketing month is estimated at 93,000 MT of in-shell pistachios. It is assumed that the remaining inventory consists of a smaller share of marketable in-shell pistachios compared to the opening inventory at the start of the marketing year.

7. Toward the end of January, Iranian pistachio prices hit the floor after a prolonged decline and then began to rise, leading to limited supply and a locked market in February. While the price disparity between Iranian and Californian pistachios still exists, this gap is narrowing down and is expected to shrink further in the coming months.
